The Hon Chief Minister, Professor Francis David, has on the 17 December 2019, formally declared the third Produce Quality Fair opened in Kenema.
As he was officially opening the Quality Produce Fair (QPF) on behalf President, Dr. Julius Maada Bio, he pronounced Government’s commitment to transform the agriculture sector to a level where Sierra Leone grow enough food for national consumption and export. Hence, the Government is working assiduously to create the enabling environment for farmers and farmer cooperatives as a way of empowering them to achieve this objective.
Prof. Francis added that the Quality Fair was to showcase the produce of farmers, giving excellence to those with quality harvest and motivating others to emulate the winners.
The Cocoa of Excellence Award was given to Sahr Bangura from Kono District as the best farmer in Sierra Leone and among the best 50 farmers in the World. Presenting the award to him on behalf of the Government, the Chief Minister congratulated Mr Bangura for making Sierra Leone proud. He cheered him to do more and encouraged others to add more value to their produce.
Dr. James Vibbi, Executive Chairman of Produce Monitoring Board (PMB), the host Agency of the event, reiterated that the produce quality Fair was organized to evaluate farmers and entrepreneurs on best production practices. Adding that the theme of this year’s event was “Quality Produce for Sustainable Development”. Only when produce get quality that they worth international market, he said.
He further encouraged all farmers to register with the Government and get their business registration in order to have more advantage in certain situations.
The Minister of Trade and Industry, Dr. Edward Hinga Sandi, and his deputy, Rev. Abraham Sesay-Jones, reiterated the significance of farming, especially of cash crops, that had helped to develop the economy of other Africa countries. They pledged Government’s continuous commitment to supporting agriculture, which would reduce the importation of commodities and promote economic diversification among others.
As they toured different booths in the field, the Chief Executive Officer (CEO) of the Sierra Leone Investment and Export Promotion Agency (SLIEPA), Mr. Sheku Lexmond Koroma, ushered the Chief Minister into the SCADeP supported SLIEPA booth where he was impressed with the made in Sierra Leone products by our entrepreneurs.
The Fair lasts from the 17- 21 December 2019.
