BALMED Holdings an indigenous company dealing mainly in agricultural products such as cocoa and coffee made the first official export of 75 metric tons of raw cashew nuts from Sierra Leone to Vietnam in collaboration with Sierra Leone Investment and Export Promotion Agency (SLIEPA). The quality of the export will be tested in Vietnam with expected feedback.
Cashew has been identified by SLIEPA as one of the non-traditional export products with enormous export potential. Over the past few years, there has been increased production and value addition in cashew across the country. SLIEPA has been working with the Ministry of Trade and Industry and the Produce Monitoring Board to develop a regulatory framework for cashew.
SLIEPA through its market linkage programme identified three cashew producers in the Bombali, Bo, and Kono districts and linked them to Balmed Holdings which resulted in the purchase of cashew for its first official export. ‘As Sierra Leone records its first official export of raw cashew nuts, thanks to SLIEPA for making this happen…’ remarked Mr Medgar Browne of Balmed Holdings.
