The Centre for the Promotion of Imports from Developing Countries (CBI), an agency of the Ministry of Foreign Affairs of the Netherlands and the Sierra Leone Investment and Export Promotion Agency (SLIEPA) are working together to explore opportunities for an export development project in Sierra Leone.
CBI has engaged Fair and Sustainable Consulting of the Netherlands to conduct a value chain selection in Sierra Leone, in collaboration with a local expert, Mr. Sanusi Deen. The goal of this value chain selection is to identify which value chains offer opportunities for a new CBI project in Sierra Leone. Fair and Sustainable Consulting is consulting a wide range of stakeholders in Sierra on the identification and selection of appropriate value chains for suitable CBI interventions
On Monday 19th November 2018, SLIEPA and CBI commenced a two day stakeholder consultative process for Sierra Leone which included exporters from different export value chains, NGOs, regulators and officials from key government Ministries and Agencies. The CBI Team Leader Peter van Gilst, and Lisanne van Beek, Programme Manager West Africa, Netherlands Enterprise Agency (RVO.nl) outlined the role of CBI in supporting SMEs across 35 countries worldwide to integrate into global value chains and enter the competitive European market. They reported that the CBI was undertaking a similar intervention in the neighbouring Republic of Guinea where they had just concluded a similar value chain selection process.
Lead Consultant, Victor van der Linden outlined the value chain selection methodology to be used and reported that 7 Value Chains, palm oil, coffee, cashew, vegetables, pineapples, groundnut and horticulture products were proposed for selection and would be ranked based on their productivity levels and availability for export to the Netherlands.
The Chief Executive Officer of SLIEPA, Sheku Lexmond Koroma in a brief statement, spoke on SLIEPAs mandate of investment and export promotion focusing on product diversification and value addition and assured the CBI and Fair and Sustainable Consulting of SLIEPA’s support to to the value chain selection process and looked forward to the detailed value chain identification reports and analysis from the CBI.
