Sierra Leone Hosts Conference to Transform Rice Production
The Government of Sierra Leone through the Ministry of Agriculture and Forestry (MAF) held a consultative conference on Thursday 19th July 2018 with the theme BEYOND BOUNDARIES: MOBILIZING THE PRIVATE SECTOR TO INVEST IN RICE PRODUCTION, PROCESSING AND MARKETING IN SIERRA LEONE at the Miatta Conference Hall Freetown.
The objectives of the conference were three-fold; To re-iterate Government’s commitment to providing the conducive and enabling environment for all agricultural activities including rice value chain processes, Mobilise the private sector to invest in rice production, processing and marketing in Sierra Leone and Popularise to partners an overview of MAF’s priority interventions in the next five (5) years.
Delivering the key note address His Excellency Dr Juldeh Jalloh, Vice President of the Republic of Sierra Leone reiterated Government’s commitment in providing the necessary support to the Ministry of Agriculture and incentives to the Private Sector to make Sierra Leone not only food sufficient with specific focus on rice production which is the country’s staple food but also a rice exporting country under the ‘New Direction’ administration in fulfilment of His Excellency President Bio’s promise to the people of Sierra Leone.
The conference was chaired by Professor David Francis Chief Minister of the Government of Sierra Leone who stated that the transformation of rice production to be able to feed this nation is ‘our generational mission’ and must succeed under the auspices of the New Direction administration. Other speakers at the conference included the Minister of Agriculture and Forestry Hon Joseph Ndanema, Mr Wilfred Sam-king, Business man, Mr. Fuaad Daboh, Director General, National Social Security and Insurance Trust (NASSIT), Hon Peter Bayuku Konteh, Minister of Trade and Industry and Hon. Jacob Jusu Saffa, Minister of Finance.
